KWASI PRATT IS NO LONGER CPP's SPOKESPERSON

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr has been axed from his position as the spokesperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).Mr Pratt has been replaced by Kosi Dedey, a 37-year-old former CPP parliamentary candidate in the 2004 elections and current chairman for Ho Central.

CPP General Secretary, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet explained that Mr. Pratt was knocked off his position because the party needed a new face to spearhead its 2008 campaign agenda which, he noted, focuses on providing opportunities and social justice for the Ghanaian. Mr. Dedey, a firebrand and mechanical engineer has been appointed as the chairman of the CPP Publicity Committee, a position held by Pratt for several years.

The CPP, during its last delegates’ congress, voted out almost 90 percent of its old executive members and elected an almost new set of people to steer its affairs. They were sworn into office barely two weeks ago. On Peace FM yesterday, Pratt said it was not a bother to him even if he was dismissed from the CPP, adding however that having served the party for eight years, nobody could sack him. Meanwhile, Mr. Pratt, speaking on another Accra-based private radio station last night, challenged the legality of the assertion that he had been sacked. He said as per the CPP constitution, it is only the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party that can appoint another person to replace him, noting that the new executive had just taken office and was yet to form the new NEC.

Mr. Pratt explained further that his term as chairman of the Publicity Committee elapsed on December 14 last year, thus he currently occupies no position from which he could be sacked. Asked if he would take up another slot in the CPP, Mr. Pratt said he was not interested in any position. Lately, political observers have questioned Mr. Pratt’s commitment to the CPP, with some arguing that by his actions or inactions, he has been more of a defender of the Rawlings’ National Democratic Congress (NDC) than his own CPP.

It came as no surprise that in recent times, just after the CPP had elected Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom as its flagbearer, the former spokesperson’s comments on the CPP and their congress had been very punchy. As the field marshal of the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), Mr. Pratt had mounted various platforms together with former President Jerry Rawlings to throw missiles at the President Kufuor-led administration.
