Should Tsikata Go To Jail?

I just don't think so. In as much as I think he erred with his investment decisions, I also believe he was one of the few people who actually did their best for Ghana. If after 8yrs of trials, all the Ghanaian government could nail on him was this judgment, then I think he should be slapped with a fine and let go....MHO

MSNBC's - DAN ABRAMS IS THE BEST

I am beginning to love this guy. I think his emphasis on advocating for unbiased media reporting is great. I have no issue with Obama but I just would love to see the MSNBCs and CNNs give Americans the chance to get to know him better. How does this guy plan to reduce America's deficit and reliance on China?

KEITH OLBERMANN's POLITICAL COVERAGE IS APPALLING

Could someone tell this man to focus on O'reilly instead of his campaign to misinform Americans with biased news? Obama's momentum is engineered by the media, led by MSNBC. This is disgusting and shameful.

Watching Olbermann's show looks like another paid advert from Obama....They bring in 'an expert' to give negative spins to Clinton's campaign message and then turnaround and over blow Obama's position in the polls. Whatever happened to objectivity?

CHRIS MATTHEWS, KEITH OLBERMANN AND OBAMA

Can these guys stop their obsession over Obama? Everything they do seem to project Obama's candidacy and belittle Hillary's lead. I watched Chris Matthews during the debates leading to the Iraqi war and I listened to him not asking all the relevant questions that could have made a better case for the anti-war group.

Chuck Todd, one of Olbermann's talking heads has repeatedly talked about how Hillary's nomination is going to give Mccain an easy pass. The same Chuck Todd, surprise surprise, believes Obama would give Mcainn a tough time should the DEMs nominate him. What have these MSNBC guys been smoking?

Could someone just ask this talking head to allow Americans to figure out who would be their best leader to help them through the upcoming economic hardships?

Anas Aremeyaw Anas - The Worst Ghanaian Journalist Ever.....

First of all, how could any sane adult shoot porn videos of kids involved in prostitution and later turnaround to distribute the tapes to other media outlets? Are we so desperate for recognition that we would ignore the usage of our common sense for anything? I think Anas Aremeyaw ought to be reprimanded by any sane Ghanaian for his selfish actions.

======================================================
Ghana’s Current journalist of the Year, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, has locked horns with the Deputy Minister for Women and Children Affairs, Daniel Dugan, over the aftermath of a police raid recently carried out at a child prostitution base in Accra. The deputy Minister had alleged that Anas, after working under cover as a pimp to get a video recording of children involved in prostitution, had illegally given a copy of the said video to the US State Department and some local media houses who were using it unprofessionally.

He alleged also that Anas was working on the story with an American lady by name Tatiana Kotlyarenko, who is operating an illegal organization in Ghana. According to the Minister, Anas was making too much noise over a story other journalists had investigated in times past. Choice FM news also reported the Minister calling for the prosecution of Anas. Anas, who is also the Investigative Journalist of the Year, has not taken the allegations lightly as he has rubbished the Minister’s claims and counter-accused him of “shopping for excuses to divert attention from the irresponsible way they released the children who were to be rehabilitated at the Social Welfare Centre.”

In an interview with Daily Guide, Anas said he would drag the deputy Minister to the Media Commission, after which he would consult his lawyers on how to handle the issue. The journalist complained that what the Minister was doing was tarnishing his reputation so he would employ every legitimate means to defend it.Anas further stated that he does not in any way regret giving the tape to his colleague journalists. “Look, I am not stupid. I anticipated this would happen and I gave the evidence out to the Ghana Journalists Association and some media houses that had already done some story on the same issue so we can all fight the menace as a team. I am not ready to take journalism lectures from Mr. Dugan if that is his concept of journalism. What is wrong with sharing evidence with colleague journalists?

“I have not breached any law and I dare him to bring the evidence that the media is unlawfully using the video. Until they do the right thing, I would continue the battle and he is free to call for my prosecution; If that is what would make them rehabilitate the girls they have freed. Out of 160 confessed prostitutes, they can account for only 14 and he thinks that is an achievement. What a shame!“I feel sad and I am tempted to wonder if it is worth dying for your country. Mr. Dugan should focus on his political appointment and allow me to do my job as a journalist. I am not saying the story is my exclusive because a lot of other journalists had done some good work on it. The difference is that this is the first time a journalist has been able to get some evidence that indeed minors are being exploited sexually.

“Instead of going to look for the girls they released and bring them back for rehabilitation or thinking of something more sensible to tell Ghanaians, he goes about acting as if the rehabilitation of the girls is not on his priority list. “He has been irresponsible and must apologize for the release of the girls. Fighting child sex exploitation goes beyond writing statements and looking for donor support. It involves a concerted effort and genuine commitment,” Anas indicated. An obviously angry Anas said apart from the Police, who successfully carried out the raid and handed over the girls, all the other stakeholders had failed to fulfill their part of the agreement.

Daily Guide has picked signals that Anas would be leaving the country this week and he would as well be looking for support elsewhere to rehabilitate the released girls who have reportedly gone back to their prostitution base.

Baffoe skeptical about matchfixing

Former Ghana international and tournament official Anthony Baffoe does not believe the Africa Cup of Nations has been targeted by match-fixers. Benin coach Reinhard Fabisch claimed on Thursday that he was asked to manipulate the result of his side's opening Group B match against Mali earlier this week.

The German revealed he was approached by an unknown African man at Benin's team hotel in Sekondi on Saturday, two days prior to the game with Mali, which Benin lost 1-0.

Namibia has also lodged a complaint with CAF claiming that they were approached by a betting syndicate to throw a match.

Namibia, already out of the tournament after defeats to Morocco (5-1) and hosts Ghana (1-0), say they were offered US$30 000 per player to lose their final Group A match against Guinea tomorrow (Monday).

Baffoe, now the director for international relations at the tournament's Local Organising Committee (LOC), says he is disturbed and confused by the claims.

To be honest I've never heard of something like this happening. And myself personally, I've never been approached to do such a thing, but I am surprised.

Baffoe added that match-fixing was something common in Africa, but insisted that the Nations Cup, being staged in his homeland this year, would be an unlikely arena for scandal.

I don't believe that in such a tournament - a major African competition with all professional teams and players- something like this can take place, he claimed.

The level of competition is really high here and you can see from the quality of play so far that players are trying.

If I was a player, why would I want to throw the game? In this year's African Nations Cup, players are looking to impress big clubs so they can perhaps earn a big move, more so the lesser teams.

BUSH TO VISIT GHANA

Africa: President Bush to Visit Five Countries

allAfrica.com

25 January 2008
Posted to the web 25 January 2008

Washington, DC

The White House announced Friday that United States President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush will visit five countries in a one-week tour of Africa next month.

The trip between February 15 and 21 will include stops in Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana and Liberia. The White House said Bush will meet the presidents of these countries "to discuss how the United States can continue to partner with African countries to support continued democratic reform, respect for human rights, free trade, open investment regimes, and economic opportunity across the continent."

It also said the trip will be an opportunity for President Bush to "review firsthand the significant progress" made in the fight against HIV/Aids and malaria. The United States has spent billions on programs fighting HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases.

Bush has called on Congress to double funding for President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (Pepfar) to U.S.$30 billion. Pepfar focuses primarily on Africa. According to government statistics, the program has helped more than one million people get antiretroviral treatment.

Bush last visited Africa in 2003.

THIS IS JOURNALISM IN GHANA

Accra, Jan 25, GNA - The National Media Commission (NMC) on Friday said two stories published on the front pages of the Thursday edition of the Daily Guide was "sensational, unethical and abusive" of the privacy of the individuals mentioned.

A statement signed in Accra by Mr Paul Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the Commission, said the first story headlined: "Policeman Raped Me" revealed the identity of a supposed rape victim by mentioning her name, place of residence, name of husband and age.

According to the Commission, even though the paper sought to blur the picture of the victim, the attempt was ineffective and in any case, could have done little to protect her image in her community. "The Commission is concerned that the paper may have done as much damage to the woman as the alleged rapist. And the stigma associated with publicity may also deter other rape victims from reporting the conduct of rapists".

To the Commission, while the ethics of journalism permitted limited disclosure of personal details of rape victims, especially where the victims themselves had sought publicity and have been made to understand the implications of publicity, the profession demanded of journalists handling such a story to treat the victim with circumspection with the ultimate aim of helping seek justice rather than court scorn.

"The Daily Guide's story failed this basic test. Even though the writer indicates that the supposed victim spoke to the paper suggesting that she had consented to the publication, the treatment of the story lacked the professional sensitivity demanded in such situations".

Furthermore, the Commission described the second story with headline "Mills in Coma" as misleading, sensational and insensitive. It said the introduction of the adjective "political" in the lead of that story could not redeem a highly speculative story with little factual basis.

It was of considerable professional worry that the writer went ahead to publish such a speculative story about a former Vice-President of this country even when the paper had no facts to support its assertion, the statement indicated.

"As a profession in the service of society, journalism does not deviate from cultural imperatives. The etiquette of Ghanaian society required all to show sensitivity to the sick and vulnerable. "As a result, even where facts were established about the ailing health of a person, the appropriate response may be that of goodwill and speedy recovery. It is therefore worrisome where a newspaper creates illness for a public figure in the service of his nation without the sensitivity demanded by the profession."

It therefore deplored the behaviour of the Daily Guide and enjoined all journalists to perform professionally as the nation prepares for election 2008.

Ghana Government and Useless Excuses

These people always cover their screw ups with choice words such as 'mix up' ' miscommunication' etc. If this minister really wants to be taken seriously, then she should tell us they mean business by firing whoever caused the mix up. We have had enough of such BS!
=============================== ===================== =======================

Accra, Jan. 23, GNA - The Ministry of Education, Science and Sports has admitted that the poor nature of the pitch at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra, was due to mismanagement and non applications of directives regarding its use.

According to the Ministry, though participating teams were not supposed to use the pitch for any form of activity for at least three days before the opening game, this was not adhered to, hence the bad nature of the pitch during the Black Stars match. Miss Elizabeth Ohene, Minister of State at the Ministry, said at Press Conference on Wednesday that the mismanagement of the pitch was due to the mix up on the schedules by the Accra venue teams, including the Black Stars of Ghana.

"Due to the mix up in the schedules of the four teams in Accra, any of them could move to the Stadium to train and the security personnel could not turn them away."

This, she said, prevented officials of Green Grass Technology (GGT) - contractors working on the pitch, to embark on the necessary maintenance measures to keep the pitch is excellent playing shape for the championship.

Miss Ohene explained that the four teams had been given their schedules and were adhering to them by training at their allocated training pitches.

The Minister said efforts were being made to put the pitch in good shape before Ghana's game against Namibia on Thursday. She gave the assurance that the pitch would be in perfect condition before Sunday, January 27.

Miss Ohene's position was corroborated by Mr Osei Bonsu Amoah, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports. Mr Amoah said the Ministry received numerous complaints from GGT concerning the use of the pitch and they had taken the necessary steps to control it.

He said the Ministry was in consultation with GGT to ensure that the pitch was put in the best of conditions for the remaining matches.

HAS GHANA'S JOYFM HIT THE BOTTOM?

How could such a media outlet post a picture of child pornography on their frontpage?

This is an eyesore and a disrespect to the people of Ghana.

JoyFM 's Omissions.....

Notice how JoyFM has conveniently chosen not to state the government's statement on why they sent well armed security personnel to Mr. Poku's house. The CDS of Ghana's army actually spoke on JoyFM and made it public that Mr. Poku threatened to use force should any one dare to debrief him. Why has JoyFM so conveniently refused to make the government's case clear to their listeners?

Below is the report on JoyFM's website:

Sacked National Security Minister, Francis Poku has left Ghana for the United Kingdom to cool off.

He left on Saturday January 19, 2008.

His departure follows a compromise reached after mediation efforts by the Asantehene, Osei Tutu II.

The closed door meeting between President Kufuor and Francis Poku was held following the furore that the dismissal of the latter had caused.

After Mr. Poku was sacked last Saturday by the president, police personnel stormed his residence subsequently. The presence of the police in his residence was later reported as a house arrest.

The government however, denied that and said the incident reported to be a house arrest was a debriefing session.

But Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. J.B. Danquah during an interview on Peace FM, said the police personnel went to Mr. Poku’s residence because he refused instructions to go to Australia House to hand over and had threatened to shoot any one who comes into his residence.

It is not known how long he would be in the UK.

KWASI PRATT IS NO LONGER CPP's SPOKESPERSON

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr has been axed from his position as the spokesperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).Mr Pratt has been replaced by Kosi Dedey, a 37-year-old former CPP parliamentary candidate in the 2004 elections and current chairman for Ho Central.

CPP General Secretary, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet explained that Mr. Pratt was knocked off his position because the party needed a new face to spearhead its 2008 campaign agenda which, he noted, focuses on providing opportunities and social justice for the Ghanaian. Mr. Dedey, a firebrand and mechanical engineer has been appointed as the chairman of the CPP Publicity Committee, a position held by Pratt for several years.

The CPP, during its last delegates’ congress, voted out almost 90 percent of its old executive members and elected an almost new set of people to steer its affairs. They were sworn into office barely two weeks ago. On Peace FM yesterday, Pratt said it was not a bother to him even if he was dismissed from the CPP, adding however that having served the party for eight years, nobody could sack him. Meanwhile, Mr. Pratt, speaking on another Accra-based private radio station last night, challenged the legality of the assertion that he had been sacked. He said as per the CPP constitution, it is only the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party that can appoint another person to replace him, noting that the new executive had just taken office and was yet to form the new NEC.

Mr. Pratt explained further that his term as chairman of the Publicity Committee elapsed on December 14 last year, thus he currently occupies no position from which he could be sacked. Asked if he would take up another slot in the CPP, Mr. Pratt said he was not interested in any position. Lately, political observers have questioned Mr. Pratt’s commitment to the CPP, with some arguing that by his actions or inactions, he has been more of a defender of the Rawlings’ National Democratic Congress (NDC) than his own CPP.

It came as no surprise that in recent times, just after the CPP had elected Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom as its flagbearer, the former spokesperson’s comments on the CPP and their congress had been very punchy. As the field marshal of the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), Mr. Pratt had mounted various platforms together with former President Jerry Rawlings to throw missiles at the President Kufuor-led administration.
